Microsoft Encarta to be discontinued
One of the renowned education suite from Microsoft, the Microsoft Encarta is being put to an end this year. On October 31, 2009, MSN® Encarta® Web sites worldwide will be discontinued, with the exception of Encarta Japan, which will be discontinued on December 31, 2009. Additionally, Microsoft will cease to sell Microsoft Student and Encarta Premium software products worldwide by June 2009. Microsoft didn’t elaborate much of the reason why this action is taken.

Encarta has been a popular product around the world for many years. However, the category of traditional encyclopedias and reference material has changed. People today seek and consume information in considerably different ways than in years past. As part of Microsoft’s goal to deliver the most effective and engaging resources for today’s consumer, it has made the decision to exit the Encarta business.

Pegasys TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress software performance increase 446% with NVIDIA CUDA
Using NVIDIA CUDA technology (a C-language programming environment for the GPU), Pegasys is taking advantage of the parallel processing capabilities of an NVIDIA GeForce GPU to create a GPU-enabled beta version of TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress software. The software is used to dramatically increase video decode and processing speed by as much as 446% on a GeForce GPU, as showcased a technology demonstration to optimise video processing with the massively parallel architecture of the GPU at NVISION 2008 conference

“Leveraging NVIDIA CUDA technology to accelerate our application on the GPU has dramatically improved the filtering speed of the TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress software,” said Tak EBINE, CEO, Pegasys Inc. “CUDA technology has helped us deliver this result in a relatively short development time because it is intuitive to C programmers.” TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress software converts and compresses (encodes) all types of video files that can be played on the PC, including MPEG, AVI, WMV, DivX, FLV, as well as DVD video. Pegasys’ unique Video Mastering Engine’s interface has gained a reputation for being user-friendly, enabling easy editing and conversion of video sources.

Google enters browser competition with Google Chrome
Google Chrome is a browser that combines a minimal design with sophisticated technology to make the web faster, safer, and easier. It is now available in beta version to download. This is almost at the same time as Microsoft released its Internet Explorer 8 in beta for download. A lot of new features are introduced:

  • One box for everything. Web search. Web history. Address bar. Suggestions as you type. One unified box serves all your browsing needs
  • New Tab page. Every time you open a new tab, you’ll see a visual sampling of your most visited sites, most used search engines, and recently bookmarked pages and closed tabs.
  • Application Shortcuts. Use web apps without opening your browser. Application shortcuts can directly load your favorite online apps.
  • Dynamic Tabs. You can drag tabs out of the browser to create new windows, gather multiple tabs into one window or arrange your tabs however you wish — quickly and easily.
  • Crash Control. Every tab you’re using is run independently in the browser, so if one app crashes it won’t take anything else down.
  • Incognito mode. Don’t want pages you visit to show up in your web history? Choose incognito mode for private browsing.
  • Safe browsing. Google Chrome warns you if you’re about to visit a suspected phishing, malware or otherwise unsafe website.
  • Instant bookmark. Want to bookmark a web page? Just click the star icon at the left edge of the address bar and you’re done.
  • Importing setting. When you switch to Google Chrome, you can pick up where you left off with all the bookmarks and passwords from your existing browser.
  • Simpler download. No intrusive download manager; you see your download’s status at the bottom of your current window.

Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 in beta to download
Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) is now available in a beta version meant for ordinary users. A lot of improvement and features are added, such as InPrivate, which is private browsing mode. Also when your cursor moves over, say, an address on a Web site, one of IE8’s so-called Accelerators drops down a menu bar of different Web option, like showing an address on a map or searching a name. No more copying and pasting across Web sites. IE8 has also been designed so that tabbed Web sites are isolated. That means a poorly behaving Web site won’t crash the whole browser, just that tab.

Microsoft Windows 7 snapshot
Microsoft has confirmed that the upcoming Windows after Vista, Windows 7, will be released in 2010. Officially, the Redmond company has only been saying that Windows 7 development would take an estimated three-year timeframe. However, Microsoft always failed to specify the moment when the three-year timeframe started. The debut of Windows 7 development was indeed connected with the release of Windows Vista, but this aspect only contributed to the confusion because the latest Windows client was launched to businesses in November 2006 and to the general public in January 2007. So in this context, the finalization of Windows 7 could just as easily be aimed for the end of 2009, as well as 2010.

microsoft windows xp
The new service pack 3 for Windows XP edition is now available for download. This SP3 includes all previously released updates for the operating system and a small number of new functionalities, which do not significantly change your experience with the operating system. The XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) is compatible with the Network Access Protection functionality of Windows Server 2008 and includes improvements to black hole router detection (detecting routers that are silently discarding packets), turning it on by default. Another interesting change is in the activation procedure. Now you won’t need to enter your product key while installing Windows XP SP3 as the checking process is a part of Windows Genuine Advantage.
